Growing Garlic ... with the help of God ???

Wednesday, 8 December 2004

Father Rick McCann from Oaks Church in the Southern Highlands shares his
knowledge on how to grow good garlic. He has been growing garlic for around
14 years. His last giant clove weighed in at a staggering 1.54kg. Rick grows
about 110kg to 140kg of garlic each year in a plot that is only about five
metres by three metres. How does he do it?

You have to prepare the ground and then watch for the weather; you plant any
time from mid-February to mid-March. I keep an eye out for good rain coming
then I plant. You need garlic which has started to go green at the top and then
you plant each clove just under the ground.

I pump my water out of a well. I never use tap water on the garlic, (I think) it
is garbage. To know when to harvest you wait until it gets a big mauve flower.
When that starts to go off you wait until the ground has dried out and then
move in with the backhoe
